Chestertown, Md. – First-year midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) collected her third straight hat trick as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 non-conference decision at Washington College Tuesday afternoon.

Along with her three goals, Newman added a team-best four ground balls. Senior attacker Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) contributed to the Seahawk offense with three assists and one goal.

Sophomore midfielder Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) sandwiched her third goal of the season between two Washington scores for a 2-1 game at 24:48. Newman and first-year attacker Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) gave St. Mary's its only lead of the game, 3-2, at 23:47. The Shorewomen responded with two of their own before Newman converted her second free position shot of the day for a 4-4 draw at 16:15.

Corrine Ziccardi scored twice as Washington rattled four straight for an 8-4 advantage at 4:53. Senior captain Amelia Tenberg (Manchester, Md./Hereford) made it a three-goal halftime deficit for the Seahawks with her sixth goal of the season at 2:27.

Carly Eisenbrandt paced the Shorewomen offense with four goals and six draw controls while Ziccardi, who scored her 100th goal with her first tally of the day, finished with a hat trick and an assist.

Washington (3-0) rolled to a 14-5 margin with 13 minutes left in regulation as the Shorewomen started off the second half with six unanswered goals, including a pair from Eisenbrandt. Shafer converted on a free position shot for St. Mary's first goal since the 2:27-minute mark of the first half.  Shafer then assisted on the Seahawks' final two goals in a 12-second span in the final 27 seconds of the game.

Seahawk goalie Michelle DiMenna (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) put up a career-high 18 saves, including a dozen in the first half, while first-year midfielder Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) aided the defense with four caused turnovers. Stephanie Seibert collected nine stops, including seven in the second stanza, for the Washington win.

St. Mary's will be back in action this Friday, March 8 when the Seahawks travel to Owings Mills, Maryland to face Stevenson University in non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
