Box Score Salisbury, Md. – The 2013 campaign came to a close for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team in the semifinals of the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The fourth-seeded Seahawks dropped a 16-4 decision to top-seeded Salisbury University Saturday afternoon on the Eastern Shore.
The Seahawks close out the season with an 8-10 (3-3 CAC) overall record while No. 2 Salisbury (17-0) will host the championship game next Saturday, May 4 and will face second-seeded York College of Pennsylvania, who defeated third-seeded University of Mary Washington, 12-5, in today's other semifinal contest.
Four players for St. Mary's found the back of the net today as sophomore attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) tallied an unassisted goal in the first half while attackers Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and Sarah Harnish (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and senior midfielder Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) all scored in the second stanza while senior midfielder Amelia Tenberg (Manchester, Md./Hereford) assisted on Harnish's goal.
Senior attacker Lauren Feusahrens (Solomons, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) started off the game with a natural hat trick, sparking a 5-0 Sea Gull run before Bishop struck for St. Mary's at 15:01. Salisbury ended the first half with another 5-0 run, including an additional tally by Feusahrens and two helpers from this year's CAC Player of the Year, Katie Bollhorst (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's).
Feusahrens finished the day with five goals and three caused turnovers while Bollhorst contributed three assists. Junior Ashton Wheatley (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury School) recorded two saves in each half as Wheatley played 43 minutes.
Feusahrens opened up the second half with an unassisted score before Harnish picked up her 10th of the season at 26:09. The Sea Gulls put together their final 5-0 run of the contest as Gray (4:11) and Shafer (2:21) netted the game's final two goals.
The draw control and ground ball battles were both close as Salisbury just edged the Seahawks, 12-9 and 14-12, respectively.
First-year midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) paced the Seahawks with game-highs of six draw controls and four ground balls while sophomore Michelle DiMenna (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made nine stops and scooped up two loose balls in 53 minutes of play.
