St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team to a 5-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the host York College of Pennsylvania Spartans Sunday afternoon.
Feighner battled junior Nathaniel Hoskins (Gap, Pa.) for a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles to give the Seahawks (10-5, 2-1 CAC) their seventh consecutive win.
St. Mary's opened up with a 2-0 advantage as the tandem of junior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and the duo of Feighner and junior J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) picked up doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.
York (10-9, 2-3 CAC) cut the lead to 2-1 as sophomore Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md.) and junior Mario Herrera (San Francisco, Calif.) posted an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over first-year duo of Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) and Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown).
Gear and Guzzone stretched St. Mary's advantage to 4-1 with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively. York's senior Eric Cooperman (Bridgewater, N.J.) notched a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Hardesty to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Erk then tallied a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Bishop at No. 6 singles to pull the Spartans within one with two singles matches left.
Feighner then grabbed the win at No. 3 singles to give the Seahawks the match win before sophomore Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J.) captured No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Paulishak.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 when St. Mary's travels to the Eastern Shore to face Salisbury University in a Capital Athletic Conference match at 2:30 pm.
