Seahawk Women's Basketball Drops CAC Game at No. 13 York (Pa.)

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team were missing two of their starters in a tough loss at undefeated and nationally-ranked York College of Pennsylvania Wednesday night, falling 69-41 to No. 13 York in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Seniors Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) combined for 27 points as the Seahawks dropped to 5-8 (2-4 CAC) on the season. Lewis led the way with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Pruden contributed 12 points, nine boards, and a career-best three blocks.

St. Mary's was missing the offensive output of senior forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel), the team's second-leading scorer, and junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School), the team's leading sharpshooter, as the Seahawks shot a season-low 18.2% from the floor for the game.

York (14-0, 7-0 CAC) boasted a 33-12 halftime advantage as the Spartans shot 37.1% from the field and were led by 10 points and five caroms from senior forward Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md.). Pruden paced St. Mary's at the break with six points and six rebounds.

Shooting improved for St. Mary's over the final 20 minutes, jumping from 10.3% in the first half to 26.9%, and Lewis contributed to the stronger offense with 11 of her 15 points in the second stanza.

The conference's top two rebounding teams battled tonight with York (43.7 rpg) grabbing 53 to the Seahawks' (43.8 rpg) 44 boards. Senior center Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern) aided the team's solid performance on the boards with eight while junior guard Sarit Truskey (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) chipped in a career-best seven caroms.

Senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa.) was the top scorer and rebounder for York with game-highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds while Haley finished the night with 14 and six, respectively.

The Seahawks will look to return to the win column on Saturday, January 18th when St. Mary's welcomes Wesley College (3-10, 0-6 CAC) to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another conference tilt at 2:00 p.m.
