Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The senior trio of Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill), Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie), and Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to a 75-65 Capital Athletic Conference win over Frostburg State University Wednesday night.
Pruden collected her seventh double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds, marking the third time with 20-plus points this year. Lewis just missed a triple-double with her second 20-point performance as she finished with 20 points, nine boards, and a career-best seven assists while Pearson tallied her second double-double of 2013-14 with 18 points and 10 caroms.
Frostburg State (2-8, 1-4 CAC) edged the Seahawks in the first half with a 39-37 advantage at intermission behind senior guard Elaina Hummel (Huntingdon, Pa./Southern Huntingdon), who came off the bench to put up 11 points while junior guard Simone Wise (Baltimore, Md./Howard) chipped in nine.
The Bobcats turned around a four-point St. Mary's lead with a 14-8 run over the final five minutes of the first half for the two-point halftime margin. Pearson led all players after first 20 minutes with 14 points while Pruden followed with 11 and six rebounds.
St. Mary's (4-7, 2-3 CAC) regained the lead for good by outscoring the Bobcats, 22-10, from the start of the second half to post a 59-49 advantage at 10:25. Frostburg State pulled within four on three different occasions, including closing the gap to 69-65 at 2:08 on a layup by junior forward Jasmine Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Blake). Lewis scored four of the Seahawks' final six points to seal the win.
The Seahawks dominated the glass by a 57-39 margin with three players notching double-digit rebounds. Joining Pearson and Pruden in the 10-plus rebound club was senior forward Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern) as Wallace hauled in 10 boards.
Hummel finished the game with 15 points for the Bobcats while Wise added two more points in the second half to end the night with 11. First-year guard Kayla Love (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) contributed 10 as she was 2-of-5 from downtown.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, January 11th as St. Mary's travels to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on conference newcomer, Southern Virginia University, in a match-up at 1:00 p.m.
