Seahawk Women's Basketball Falls to No. 14 York (Pa.)

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team dropped a 64-43 Capital Athletic Conference decision to No. 14 York College of Pennsylvania Wednesday evening. York (21-1, 13-1 CAC) collects the series sweep of the Seahawks (8-13, 5-9 CAC) with this evening's win as the Spartans posted a 69-41 victory at home on January 15th.

Senior forward Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) paced St. Mary's in the loss with 10 points and eight rebounds while senior center Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) contributed nine points and eight boards as well.

Both teams dealt with sluggish starts as St. Mary's and York combined for a 0-for-9 effort from the floor and 3-for-6 from the free throw line. Lewis connected on the game's first field goal for a 4-1 Seahawk lead before York broke the game open with a 27-4 run for a 20-point advantage with 3:27 remaining in the half.

The Spartans sported a 34-14 halftime lead behind a 15-for-18 performance at the line and three three-pointers to St. Mary's 0-for-3 effort from downtown. Seniors Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) led all scorers with seven points while sophomore Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) was the Seahawks' top scorer with four.

St. Mary's closed the gap to 38-24 on a Pruden layup but would get no closer as the Spartans ran away with the game, leading by 30 with six minutes to go.

Murphy finished with a game-high 15 points while Haley chipped in 13 and a game-best nine boards.

St. Mary's will be back home this Saturday, February 15th as the Seahawks welcome CAC newcomer, Southern Virginia University, to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a CAC game at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the five Seahawk seniors – Lewis, Pruden, Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel), Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern), and Bridget Wilkins (Washington, D.C./Washington Waldorf) – will be recognized for their contributions to the program.
