Poffenberger Leads Seahawk Women's Lacrosse in Season-Opener

Leonardtown, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) tallied her first career hat trick but it wasn't enough as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team dropped their season-opener, 16-6, to Washington & Lee University Wednesday afternoon. The game was played at SMR Stadium at St. Mary's Ryken High School.

Sophomore midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) finished with a goal and an assist as well as a team-best four ground balls while sophomore midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana) gained a team-high three draw controls.

The two sides traded the first six goals of the contest as the game was tied 3-3 at 16:26. Washington & Lee (2-0) distanced themselves from the Seahawks with three consecutive goals in a two-minute span for a 6-3 lead at 7:42. Neither team scored for the next five minutes until sophomore midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) converted on a free position shot.

The Generals closed out the half with two goals 22 seconds apart in the final 1:45 of the half for an 8-4 halftime advantage.

Senior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) registered her second straight four-goal performance while senior attacker Greta Witter (Houston, Texas/Hill School) added two goals and two assists to pace the Generals.

St. Mary's (0-1) netted the first score of the second half just 36 seconds as junior attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) quick-sticked a feed from Newman. W&L picked up the next two goals before Poffenberger cut the lead to 10-6 at 14:15. It was all Generals after that as W&L tallied the final six goals.

Sophomore Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) recorded six stops with two ground balls while junior Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) turned away five Seahawk shots.

The Seahawks will look to rebound this Saturday, February 22nd as St. Mary's faces Dickinson College in a neutral-site game at St. Paul's School (Brooklandville, Md.). Game time is 3:00 p.m.
