Box Score Dover, Del. – A dominant second half by the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team powered them to a 67-55 Capital Athletic Conference road win over Wesley College Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both sides.
Today's win completes the series sweep by the Seahawks (10-14, 6-10 CAC) over Wesley. St. Mary's posted a 73-57 victory over the Wolverines at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena on January 18th.
The Seahawks, who clinched the sixth seed on Wednesday for the upcoming 2014 CAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament, will now face third-seeded Salisbury University (17-8, 12-5 CAC) at Salisbury's Maggs Physical Activities Center on Tuesday, February 25th for first-round action.
Senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) paced St. Mary's in the win with her 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) also scored in double digits, notching 15 points, four assists, four steals, and three boards.
Despite the Seahawks shooting 40.0% (8-of-20) in the first half, Wesley (5-20, 2-14 CAC) owned a 29-25 halftime advantage. St. Mary's tallied a 21-11 lead at 6:54 before the Wolverines erased the 10-point deficit with an 11-0 run for the fifth lead change of the game.
Junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) led the visitors at intermission with nine points as Vagnoni drained three triples. However, first-year Briona Johnson (Smyrna, Del.) exploded for 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Wesley to the four-point halftime lead.
The Seahawks upped their shooting percentage to 50.0% (12-of-24) in the second half and turned around the four-point deficit with a 24-9 run to lead by 11 with 7:34 left in the contest. Wesley worked the lead down to five with 3:44 remaining but St. Mary's closed out the game on a 16-9 run to secure the win. The SMCM defense was stronger as well, holding Johnson to five points and three boards.
Johnson finished with a double-double on game-highs of 25 points, 15 caroms, and five steals while junior Roniece Williams (Seaford, Del.) tallied 11 points and sophomore Tiara White (Philadelphia, Pa.) hauled in 10 rebounds.
