Lewis, Second-Half Surge Lift St. Mary's Women's Basketball over Frostburg State

Box Score

Frostburg, Md. – It was a tale of two halves Saturday afternoon. The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to post a 79-74 come-from-behind Capital Athletic Conference victory over the host Frostburg State University Bobcats.

With the win, St. Mary's (8-12, 5-8 CAC) completes the series sweep of the Bobcats (5-14, 3-10 CAC) as the Seahawks notched a 75-65 win at home on January 8th. Today's victory also solidified St. Mary's hold on the sixth and final playoff spot with a two-game advantage on Frostburg and 3.5 games ahead of Penn State Harrisburg (6-15, 1-11 CAC) and Wesley College (4-17, 1-11 CAC).

Four of the five Seahawk starters scored in double digits to lead the team to victory. Senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) set the tone with a career-best 26 points (13 in each half) on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and 10-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) was not to be outdone with her ninth double-double of the season on 19 points and career-high 16 rebounds.

The Seahawks found themselves down 43-32 at halftime after junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) drained a three with five seconds left in the half to cut Frostburg's 15-point lead to 11. FSU shot nearly 45% (16-of-36) from the floor, including 36.4% (4-of-11) from downtown, and received 23 points from its bench. Senior guard Elaina Hummel (Huntingdon, Pa.) dropped 11 points to pace the Bobcats while first-year Kayla Love (Silver Spring, Md.) led the FSU bench with eight.

St. Mary's regrouped in the locker room and methodically worked to claw at the Bobcats' double-figure lead. The Seahawks outscored the home team, 27-14, over the second stanza's opening 12 minutes to stake a 59-57 lead at 8:34. Vagnoni's second three-pointer of the afternoon gave her team their first lead since 11:26-minute mark of the first half.

The Seahawks stretched their lead to nine twice on a pair of Pruden free throws at 6:17 and a Vagnoni layup at 5:53. However, Frostburg was not done as the Bobcats closed the gap to three four times in a near five-minute span. FSU missed its last four shots, including a pair of long-range shots, in the final minute of the game while St. Mary's went 5-of-6 at the line to hold on for the win.

Vagnoni finished the day with 12 points, nine caroms, and season-best four assists while senior Bridget Wilkins (Washington, D.C./Washington Waldorf) tallied a season-best 10 points, four boards, and career-high two blocks.

The Seahawks dominated the boards with a 59-37 rebounding margin, including a 34-15 advantage in the second half. The team improved their shooting in the second half, moving from 31.4% in the first half to 47.1% (16-of-34) in the second. St. Mary's finished the game with a 75.9-free throw percentage, including a 13-of-15 mark in the final 20 minutes.

Hummel finished as the Bobcats' leading scorer and rebounder with 25 points and eight rebounds while junior guard Simone Wise (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 13 points. Love only added one more point to her first-half total for a nine-point day.

St. Mary's returns home on Wednesday, February 12th to face No. 15 York College of Pennsylvania at 6:00 pm in another conference matchup at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
