St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team began Capital Athletic Conference action with a solid 6-3 win over York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon for their second win of the season.
The Seahawks (2-4) owned a 2-1 lead after doubles action with sophomores Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) and Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) succumbing to a hard-fought 8-5 loss at No. 3 doubles.
Seniors Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) stretched St. Mary's advantage to 4-1 with a pair of easy, straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. York (3-2, 0-1 CAC) got one back with junior Matt Rosenkrantz's (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) win at No. 2 singles.
First-year Kaltrin Bullaj (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) then closed the gap to 4-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Paulishak.
Senior J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) sealed the match win for the Seahawks with a three-set win at No. 4 singles over junior Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown). Guzzone won the first set 6-4 before falling 4-6 in the second. He then cruised to a 6-1 win third set for a 5-3 SMCM lead.
Bishop recovered from his doubles loss with a marathon win at No. 5 singles over junior Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J.). He edged Greenstein, 7-6 (7-5), in the first set but Greenstein rallied with a 6-3 win in the second. It was another battle in the third set but Bishop pulled out a 7-6 (7-5) win.
St. Mary's will back on the courts tomorrow afternoon as the Seahawks welcome Hood College to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
