Salisbury, Md. – Senior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) was the only victor for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team in their Capital Athletic Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Salisbury University. The Seahawks dropped an 8-1 decision to fall to 4-7, 2-2 CAC on the season.

Gear and senior Daniel Albers (Denville, N.J.) battled for the third time in their careers and Gear came out on top to improve to 3-0 against Albers. It has never been easy matchup as the regular-season meetings have always been decided in three sets.

This afternoon, Albers staked a 6-2 in the first set before Gear rallied with a 7-6 (7-5) triumph in the second to force a tiebreaker set. Gear went on to outlast Albers, 10-8, for his team-best 10th singles win of the season.

Salisbury (10-4, 4-2 CAC), who is ranked 19th in the Atlantic South region, owned a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles but not without a fight from the Seahawks. Senior Shane Gunther (Centreville, Md.) and sophomore Shanon Gunther (Centreville, Md.) claimed a hard-fought 9-7 win over seniors John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) at No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Matthew McGaffney (Cape May, N.J.) and junior Demetri Vrahnos (Plainsboro, N.J.) toughed it out against sophomores Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) and Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles. The loss snapped the duo's two-match win streak.

Another exciting and solid effort was put forth by Guzzone at No. 4 singles as he came back from a set down with a 6-4 win to force a tiebreaker set. Shane Gunther got the best of Guzzone with a 10-5 win for the point.

St. Mary's will be back on the courts tomorrow afternoon as the Seahawks travel to western Maryland to take on Frostburg State University in another conference match at 12:00 p.m.
