St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) scored twice as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team faced off against the defending national champion, No. 1 Salisbury University, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day, falling 11-3 in the Capital Athletic Conference matchup.

Senior Day, or 'Sarah Day' as it was called, was celebrated before the start of the game as St. Mary's honored its lone senior, Sarah Harnish (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis). The Sea Gulls' five seniors were also recognized.

Salisbury (15-0, 6-0 CAC), who is riding a 38-game win streak, staked a 3-0 lead at 20:46 before first-year attacker Abbey Harrison (Easton, Md./Easton) put the Seahawks (7-7, 3-2 CAC) on the scoreboard at 15:53 as Harrison took a feed from sophomore midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley).

The Sea Gulls, who have won 16 straight over St. Mary's, picked up two more scores to take a 5-1 advantage into halftime. In the first half, Salisbury outshot the Seahawks, 13-4, and edged the home team by a 4-3 margin in draw controls. Ground balls were even at five apiece.

Junior attacker Shelby Nemecek (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) commanded the Salisbury offense with a game-best five goals while senior attacker Shannon Carta (Davidsonville, Md./South River) added two goals and an assist.

Salisbury stretched its 2-0 run that ended the first half to a 7-0 run as the Sea Gulls fired off five straight to open the second stanza. Poffenberger ended the Seahawks' nearly 30-minute scoreless drought with her 34th goal of the season at 15:54 off an assist by first-year midfielder Ali Moulis (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's). SU tallied its final goal 37 seconds later before Poffenberger scored again.

Salisbury doubled up on the Seahawks in shots, 24-12, and edged them, 11-10 in ground balls and 9-7 draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana) came up with three draw controls while Poffenberger and sophomore midfielder Ashley Lawrence (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) each had two loose ball pickups.

Sophomore goalie Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) finished with seven saves, including five in the first half, while senior Ashton Wheatley (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury School) came up with seven stops as well for the Sea Gulls.

The Seahawks will face their second straight nationally-ranked opponent when No. 12 York College of Pennsylvania comes to Seahawk Stadium on Wednesday, April 16th for another tough CAC matchup at 4:00 p.m.
