Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team snapped a two-match skid Monday afternoon with a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University.
The Seahawks (5-7, 3-2 CAC) will wrap up their regular-season schedule tomorrow afternoon when No. 16 University of Mary Washington visits the Somerset Tennis Complex.
Seniors John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) gave St. Mary's a 1-0 lead with a shutout win at No. 2 doubles before Frostburg State evened up the score at 1-1 with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Seahawks headed into singles action with a 2-1 advantage as senior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and sophomore Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Feighner, Guzzone, Gear, Hardesty, and sophomore Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) each won their singles matches to move the St. Mary's lead to 7-1. Gear improved to 11-5 on the season with his 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and stretched his win streak to two matches in a row.
The Bobcats (4-8, 1-5 CAC) notched their second point of the match at No. 6 singles as first-year Dangran Zhu posted a 6-2, 6-0 win.
