Bishop, Poffenberger Pace Seahawk Women's Lacrosse against No. 12 York (Pa.)

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) and sophomore midfielder Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon in an 11-5 Capital Athletic Conference loss to No. 12 York College of Pennsylvania.

Bishop and Poffenberger each found the back of the net twice as the Seahawks faced their second ranked opponent in as many games.

St. Mary's (7-8, 3-3 CAC) edged the Spartans (12-3, 5-1 CAC), 15-13, in ground balls behind four pickups by sophomore midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and three by first-year defender Alli Syzmanski (Easton, Md./Easton).

York (12-3, 5-1 CAC) owned a 2-0 lead at 22:13 behind a pair of free position goals in 43 seconds. Poffenberger and Bishop scored two of the next three goals to make it a 3-2 game at 12:57. The Spartans then used a 2-0 run to stake a 5-2 advantage at 10:18. Bishop struck again at 4:15 to close the gap to two at halftime.

Senior attacker Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) and junior midfielder Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Christian Area) each collected a hat trick to command the YCP offense while sophomore attacker Brittany Noell (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) added two goals.

The two sides traded unassisted goals to start the second half and keep it at a two-goal game in favor of York. The Spartans then unleashed five unanswered goals to break the game wide open and post an 11-4 lead at 2:24. Sophomore midfielder Claire McGagh (Baltimore, Md./Friends) picked up St. Mary's final goal at 2:10 for her third tally of the season.

York outshot the Seahawks, 29-25, while dominating the draw controls by a 14-5 margin as senior midfielder Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) grabbed a game-best five draws.

Sophomore goalie Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) finished the game with 13 saves while senior Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) registered 13 stops as well in York's sixth consecutive win.

The Seahawks will look to turn around their three-game skid on Saturday, April 19th when St. Mary's travels to western Maryland to face Frostburg State University in the regular-season finale at 12:00 p.m.
