St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team rebounded from Saturday's road loss with a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference win over league newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, Sunday afternoon. It was the team's fourth match in five days.
St. Mary's (4-5, 2-0 CAC) swept all three doubles matches as senior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and sophomore Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) stretched their win streak to five with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, improving to 6-3 on the season.
Sophomores Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) and Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) battled at No. 3 doubles, coming out on top with a 9-7 triumph over first-year Austin King (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and senior Tyler Loy (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona).
Hardesty picked up his third straight win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over sophomore Ben Leibig (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) for a 4-0 SMCM lead. Gear then gave St. Mary's the match win with his fifth consecutive singles win – a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over first-year Johnny Xue (Blue Hill, Maine/George Stevens Academic).
First-year Chris Magee (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) helped Penn State Harrisburg (5-8, 0-4 CAC) avoid the shutout with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Senior J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) then gave the Seahawks a 6-1 margin with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) notched the seventh point for St. Mary's with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Loy at No. 5 singles. Senior Vincent Lepore III (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) was victorious at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision for the Lions' third point.
St. Mary's will back on the courts on Saturday, April 12th as the Seahawks welcome Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Christopher Newport University, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a CAC match at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day. Before the match, Gear, Guzzone, John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton), and Daniel Harris (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) as well as Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River Hill) will be recognized for their commitment to the men's and women's tennis programs over the past four years.
