Box Score Frostburg, Md. – The second win of the season is in the books for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team as the Seahawks picked up a 61-52 Capital Athletic Conference victory on the road at Frostburg State University Wednesday night.
First-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) was St. Mary's leading scorer for the second consecutive game and fourth time this season as Kline poured in a game- and season-best 21 points while adding season-highs of eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.
Fellow classmate Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) also scored in double digits for the Seahawks with season-best 16 points as Nowlin connected on a season-high four shots from downtown while contributing season-highs of five boards and four assists as well.
Sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) rounded out the trio of players in double-figures for St. Mary's with 11 points and chipped in six caroms and two blocks.
A balanced effort on the glass helped the Seahawks win the rebounding battle for the first time this season as eight of the nine players to enter the game grabbed at least one rebound for a +8 rebounding margin over Frostburg State.
Frostburg State (1-9, 0-5 CAC) led only twice the entire night and both instances happened in the first three minutes of the first half. The Bobcats opened up with a 2-0 lead at 18:30 and then reclaimed a 4-3 advantage at 17:02. After that it was all St. Mary's as Nowlin drained back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 14-6 run for a 14-8 lead at 11:57.
The Seahawks (2-8, 2-3 CAC) carried a 10-point advantage into the locker room at halftime as Nowlin grabbed the defensive board, took the ball down, and knocked down her fourth long-range shot of the night as time expired for a 28-18 SMCM lead. Nowlin led all scorers with 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown while senior guard Ronje' James (Baltimore, Md./Pikesville) led FSU with eight.
Kline did her damage in the second half as she tallied 16 second-half points, including 10 of St. Mary's first 16 points to start the stanza. She scored eight straight in that 16-7 opening run for the Seahawks biggest lead of the night of 19 at 14:51. The Seahawks owned a double-digit lead for all but 1:14 of the second half.
James finished with a near double-double as she paced the Bobcats with 15 points and nine rebounds while junior forward Courtney Young (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) collected a double-double of 12 and 12.
The Seahawks will look to make it three in a row this Saturday, January 10th as St. Mary's welcomes Southern Virginia University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another conference tilt at 4:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE the later start time for the women's game as the Seahawks will retire the jersey of Jamie Roberts '11 that day prior to the start of the game.
