St. Mary's Women's Basketball Claims Season-Opening Win

St. Mary's City, Md. – Three Seahawks scored in double figures in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to a season-opening 72-62 victory Friday evening over Oglethorpe University on the first day of the 2015 Dan Greene Memorial Invitational.

In other tournament action, No. 9 FDU Florham held on for a 49-41 victory over York (N.Y.) College. The tournament wraps up tomorrow, Saturday, November 14 as Oglethorpe (0-1) takes on York (0-1) at 1:00 p.m. while St. Mary's (1-0) faces FDU-Florham (1-0) at 3:00 p.m.

Sophomore guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) led the way for the Seahawks with a career- and game-best 26 points as Kline knocked down a career-high four three-point field goals. Junior guard Haley Riebling (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) started off the season strong with career-best 17 points on career-high five three-pointers.

Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed to the win with a double-double on career- and game-best 15 rebounds and 10 points. Tonight's victory is the first season-opening win for the Seahawks since opening the 2012-13 season with four straight wins.

St. Mary's really took advantage of the Stormy Petrels' 25 turnovers, scoring 27 points off those miscues. The Seahawks also connected on 10 field goals from downtown compared to only two for Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe tallied a 17-16 lead at the end of the first period after closing the quarter on a 10-4 run sparked by six points from first-year guard Bailey Charles (Ellijay, Ga.). The Seahawks reclaimed the lead and carried a 33-30 edge into the locker room as Kline and Riebling combined for 21 points and five long-range shots.

St. Mary's used an 11-4 run to erase a three-point deficit and stake a 27-21 lead with 3:02 remaining in the first half. Charles paced the Stormy Petrels with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Scoring was even at 14 apiece in the third stanza and the Seahawks took a 47-44 advantage into the fourth quarter following a layup by senior guard Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends School) with 35 ticks left.  St. Mary's pulled away in the fourth as a three-pointer by sophomore guard Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) ignited an 18-4 run for its biggest lead of the game, 67-50, at 4:16.

Nowlin put together a well-rounded game for the Seahawks with eight points, six assists, four boards, and three steals. Charles finished the evening as Oglethorpe's leading scorer with 20 while first-year forward Lauren Ransom (Nashville, Tenn.) added 16. Senior guard Aisha Atwater (Hampton, Ga.) helped the Stormy Petrels establish a 47-38 rebounding margin with 11 caroms.
