Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team battled hard Saturday afternoon against No. 9 Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham but came up on the short side of a 99-55 decision in the final day of the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational.
In other tournament action, Oglethorpe University (1-1) defeated York (N.Y.) College (0-2) by an 83-45 margin.
FDU-Florham's senior forward Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) was named the Tournament MVP while her teammate, junior center Rachel Groom (Edison, N.J./Edison), Oglethorpe's first-year guard Bailey Charles (Ellijay, Ga.), St. Mary's sophomore guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School), and York's senior guard Angelika Ruggiano (Queens, N.Y./Lane) all earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
It was first-year guard Maya Cooper (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) who paced the Seahawks in scoring with a season-best 11 points while Kline finished the afternoon with 10. On the boards, St. Mary's was led by first-year forward Kobe Chaney (Annapolis, Md./South River) as Chaney hauled in seven.
Foul trouble had the Seahawks (1-1) in a bind all game long, preventing them getting into an offensive rhythm. St. Mary's shooting went cold in the second half as well, dropping from 40.7% in the first half to 15.6% over the final 20 minutes.
St. Mary's owned a 14-13 lead in the first quarter on a Kline jumper at 3:36 before FDU-Florham (2-0) closed out the period on a 15-5 run for a 28-19 advantage at the end of the first. The Devils went on to stretch its lead to 50-35 at halftime. Groom paced FDU in the first half with 18 points while junior guard Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville) contributed 14.
The Devils continued to grow their lead in the second half, leading by as many as 47 with under five minutes remaining in the contest. FDU dominated the glass with a 59-34 rebounding margin as Brown led the charge with 14 rebounds.
Groom finished the day with 27 points while McDonough also broke 20 with 21 as she connected on three three-point field goals. Brown picked up her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 14 caroms.
St. Mary's will regroup and will look to notch its second win of the season on Tuesday, November 18 when they welcome Randolph College to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics and Recreation Center Arena for a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m.
