Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team (3-2, 1-1 CAC) locked up their first Capital Athletic Conference win against the Wesley College Wolverines (1-6, 1-2 CAC) with a 14-point differential and score of 57-43 on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks took their largest lead of the game – 24 points – with 30 seconds left in the third quarter and were steered by first-year forward Kobe Chaney (Annapolis, Md./South River), who contributed to the lead by scoring 12 of her 18 points in the third. Chaney also grabbed 11 total rebounds for her first career double-double.
Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) picked up her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 caroms while sophomore guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) chipped in nine points and seven boards.
The Wolverines were neck-in-neck with St. Mary's at the end of the first quarter as Wesley erased a seven-point deficit and pulled within 10-8. However, the Seahawks came out with a winning momentum in the second quarter. First-year guard Katie Robey (Kensington, Md./Georgetown Visitation Prep) and Kline both capitalized on three-point field goals in the second stanza to send St. Mary's into the locker room with a 29-16 halftime lead.
Haller paced all players with eight points and seven rebounds in the first half while sophomore guard Tiyanna Gibbs (Wilmington, Del./Concord) led Wesley with five points.
With a 13-point lead, St. Mary's came in ready to defeat the Wolverines in the third quarter, posting its best scoring output with 20 points. Wesley cut the Seahawks' 24-point advantage by outscoring the hosts, 17-8, in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines collected 12 points on 11 St. Mary's miscues.
The Seahawks owned a +21 rebounding margin for the game, 63-42, behind 47 defensive boards.
Gibbs finished the afternoon as Wesley's leading scorer with 12 while sophomore guard Alexus Stroud (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) added 10. However, junior Brionna Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) helped the Wolverines on the glass with seven boards.
The Seahawks will be back in action at home on Tuesday, December 8 at 8:00 p.m. as they look to defeat the Cardinals of The Catholic University of America (2-4), who are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25.
