Box Score York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team dropped a 71-59 decision at York College of Pennsylvania Wednesday night in an important Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
Tonight's loss maintains St. Mary's (6-15, 6-9 CAC) in a tie for sixth in the conference standings with Wesley College (10-12, 6-9 CAC) while York (11-11, 7-8 CAC) bumps up to the fifth spot with the win.
The Seahawks welcome Wesley to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena this Saturday, February 14th for a crucial CAC matchup at 2:00 p.m. St. Mary's needs to complete the series sweep of Wesley to keep its playoff hopes alive.
Before the game gets started on Saturday, the Seahawks will recognize their three seniors – guards Sarit Truskey (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) and center Maddie Hook (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).
Sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored four points to guide the Seahawks to a 7-2 lead within the first two minutes of the contest – the team's biggest advantage of the game. York responded with a 26-11 run in just over 13 minutes to claim a 10-point lead at 5:21 behind a triple by sophomore Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy).
The Spartans headed into the locker room with a 36-29 halftime advantage as sophomore guard Haley Riebling (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) knocked down her third three-pointer of the half. Riebling led all scorers at intermission with nine points while Hruz and first-year guard Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) each tallied eight for York.
York opened up the second stanza with a 26-8 run and never looked back, expanding its lead to 25 with 8:46 remaining. Not discouraged, the Seahawks outscored their hosts by a 19-6 margin over the final seven minutes of the game to cut the deficit to 12 as time winded down.
First-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) paced St. Mary's in scoring with 13 points as Kline was 6-of-6 from the free throw line while Riebling finished with a dozen off the bench. Haller chipped in 10 points and four rebounds while junior captain Anna McClain (Durham, Md./Carolina Friends School) grabbed game-best nine boards.
For York, Wagner notched game-best 14 points as a reserve while Hruz ended the night with 13. Senior forward Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had a near double-double with 11 and nine.
