St. Mary's Women's Basketball Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive with Sweep of Wesley

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – It's the Saturday thing to do for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team. For the third straight Saturday, the Seahawks have forced overtime and come out on top. Valentine's Day was no different as St. Mary's notched a 63-57 overtime triumph over the Wesley College Wolverines to complete the Capital Athletic Conference series sweep.

Today's victory gives St. Mary's (7-15, 7-9 CAC) the upper hand over Wesley (10-13, 6-10 CAC) for the sixth and final CAC Tournament spot but also puts them in a two-way tie for fifth with York College of Pennsylvania (11-12, 7-9 CAC) with two more games remaining in the conference regular season.

The Seahawks will host Christopher Newport University (15-8, 11-5 CAC) on Wednesday, February 18th at 6:00 p.m. before traveling to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on Southern Virginia University on Saturday, February 21st at 1:00 p.m. in the regular-season finale.

Before the game started, the Seahawks recognized and honored their three seniors – guards Sarit Truskey (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) and center Maddie Hook (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).

It was a tightly contested second half as the biggest lead was four by Wesley at 9:48 after a jumper by sophomore guard Kiara Johnson (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). The Seahawks claimed a 51-50 lead at 3:10 following a layup by first-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School).

Scoring stalled for both sides until 1:11 when sophomore Brionna Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) netted two for a one-point Wolverine advantage. Vagnoni missed a three with 33 seconds to go before sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was fouled by senior Roniece Williams (Seaford, Del./Seaford) with 14 ticks on the clock.

Haller made the frontend of two shots to knot the game up and Kline picked sophomore guard Brittney Kerns' (Bear, Del./William Penn) pocket at 00:02 to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Seahawks outscored Wesley, 11-5, gaining six points off of four Wolverine miscues. Back-to-back triples by Vagnoni and Kline in a 48-second span erased a three-point Wesley lead and swung the momentum in St. Mary's favor.

Kline finished the afternoon with game-best 20 points, five rebounds, and season-high four steals while Hook recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and career-best 11 caroms. Vagnoni also finished in double digits with 11 points while adding seven boards and three assists.

The Seahawks controlled the tempo for most of the first half and boasted a 28-17 advantage with 2:59 left in the half as first-year guard Bella Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) knocked down a pair of free throws. However, Wesley closed out the half on a 12-0 run to take a one-point lead into the locker room.

Kline and K. Johnson led their respective sides with a first-half best nine points. Hook contributed eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes to help St. Mary's edge the Wolverines, 22-20, in rebounding.

B. Johnson paced Wesley in its fifth straight loss with game-best 20 points, seven rebounds, and three steals while K. Johnson came off the bench to tally 11 points and three boards. Junior forward Tiara White (Philadelphia, Pa./Padua Academy) hauled in game-best 14 caroms and chipped in nine points.
