Bishop Scores Five as St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Edges No. 17 Washington College

Box Score

Chestertown, Md. – Senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) found the back of the net five times Saturday afternoon in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 non-conference victory over No. 17 Washington College.

Bishop netted the game-winning goal with 3:14 remaining in regulation off a feed from junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro). The game-winner came 37 seconds after sophomore attacker Katherine Vincent (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) had tied up the game at 9-all.

Washington College won the ensuing draw control after Bishop's goal and Vincent took a shot at 2:29 which junior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) denied to preserve the one-goal SMCM lead. St. Mary's earned a good clear and then worked to kill the clock.

Today's victory was the Seahawks' first win over a Top 20 team since handing No. 17 Stevenson University a 13-8 loss on April 10, 2010.

Bishop finished the game with a career-best six points as she added an assist to her career-best five goals. Poffenberger contributed a goal and two assists while sophomore midfielder Ali Moulis (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) notched two goals.

St. Mary's (2-0) opened up with a 2-0 lead before the Shorewomen scored the next three, including a pair from Vincent, to take a one-goal advantage at 23:00. The Seahawks regained the lead, 4-3, as Bishop converted on a free position shot at 16:48. The two sides alternated scores over the final 15 minutes of the half to head into intermission tied at 6-6.

Bishop led all scorers at halftime with four goals while Vincent paced Washington College with a pair.

Washington College (0-1) claimed an 8-7 advantage at 19:27 after scoring two of the second half's first three goals. Sophomore midfielder Erika Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) put the Seahawks back on top by one with 10:01 left in the game.

The Shorewomen outshot St. Mary's, 27-20, and posted a 19-16 edged in ground balls. The Seahawks earned the win in the draw control battle, 12-9, as junior defender Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and first-year midfielder Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) combined for nine draws, including a career-best five by D'Agostaro.

Dunn ended the day with a season-best 12 saves and five ground balls while sophomore Haylee Solomon (Wantagh, N.Y./Calhoun) and Maddie Mullen (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Reg.) each had four stops in WC's season-opening loss.

St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, March 3rd as the Seahawks host McDaniel College at Seahawk Stadium in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m.
