St. Mary's Women's Basketball Wins Thriller over Frostburg State

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat Saturday afternoon, completing the series sweep of Frostburg State University with a 70-67 overtime win in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Senior guard Ronje' James (Baltimore, Md./Pikesville) claimed a one-point lead for Frostburg State with 12 seconds left in regulation as James missed the frontend of two shots. St. Mary's then called a timeout to draw up the play.

The Seahawks (6-14, 6-8 CAC) inbounded the ball in the front of the Frostburg bench and first-year guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) dribbled up the left side of the court and pulled up for the jumper, missing her first attempt but grabbing her own rebound for the game-tying layup and a 59-59 draw.

Kline opened up overtime with a triple for a three-point SMCM lead before James scored four straight to return a 63-62 advantage to the Bobcats at 3:03. St. Mary's went on a 6-1 run to post a four-point lead with 19 seconds left as sophomore center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

Frostburg (2-17, 1-13 CAC) came within two behind a two-point basket by senior forward Shaniqua Hall (Baltimore, Md./Western) with nine ticks on the clock but a pair of free throws by junior captain Anna McClain (Durham, Md./Carolina Friends School) sealed the deal for the Seahawks.

Today's victory puts St. Mary's back into a three-way tie for sixth in the conference standings with Wesley College (10-11, 6-8 CAC) and York College of Pennsylvania (10-11, 6-8 CAC). It'll be a key CAC matchup on Wednesday, February 11th when the Seahawks travel to York. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m.

Senior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) led the Seahawks with 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Haller finished with 14 points and eight boards. Kline added 13 and six while McClain collected her first career double-double with 12 points and career-best 15 caroms.

St. Mary's overcame a 6-0 start by the Bobcats to stake its first lead of the game, 14-10, at 13:56 behind five straight points by sophomore guard Haley Riebling (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough). FSU regained the advantage and held on for a 24-22 halftime lead.

McClain paced the Seahawks in the first half with six points while junior forward Courtney Young (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) led all scorers with seven.

James ended the game with a game-best 26 points while senior forward Jasmine Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) contributed 14 points and eight rebounds and Young chipped in 11 and 5.
