Box Score Towson, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Ali Moulis (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) posted a career effort Wednesday evening in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 17-12 non-conference win over the host Goucher College Gophers.
Moulis tallied career-bests of four goals and three assists for seven points while junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) also registered a game-high seven points on a game-best six goals and one assist in guiding St. Mary's to its fifth consecutive win to remain undefeated on the season at 5-0.
Three different Seahawks found the back of the net for a 3-1 lead at 24:44. St. Mary's doubled up on Goucher, 6-3, at 14:02 as Moulis scored twice. The Gophers then notched three of the next four behind a pair from senior midfielder Rita Meissner (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) to close the gap to 7-6 at 2:33. However, the Seahawks netted three unanswered goals in a span of 1:50 for a 10-6 halftime lead.
Moulis and Poffenberger each tallied four points on three goals and an assist in leading all scorers while Meissner, sophomore Stefi Perry (Houston, Texas/Klein), and first-year Jojo Franklin (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) each had two for the Gophers.
The two sides alternated the first five goals of the second half with Goucher striking first and pulling within 12-9 at 17:32 as Perry recorded two more scores. The Seahawks fired in three straight for a five-goal advantage at 10:01. The Gophers answered by scoring three of the next four, including two from first-year attacker Jessica Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll), for a four-goal deficit at 4:01.
Goucher (4-2) won the draw control battle by an 18-12 margin while St. Mary's outshot the Gophers, 34-21, and earned a 23-15 edge in ground balls as junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) scooped up a game- and season-best seven loose balls while adding a career-high five caused turnovers and two goals.
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) made eight stops with three ground balls for the Seahawks while senior Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) and first-year Bridget Den Boer (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) split time equally between the pipes as Gill turned away two shots and Den Boer had five saves.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, March 14th when St. Mary's travels to Lexington, Virginia to take on No. 10 Washington and Lee University (4-1) in non-conference action at 2:00 p.m.
