Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team opened up Capital Athletic Conference play with a 9-0 shutout win over Frostburg State University (1-4, 0-2 CAC) Monday afternoon as part of the PTR Spring TennisFest down in South Carolina. The win snapped a two-match skid for the Seahawks (2-3, 1-0 CAC).
Junior captains Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) and Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles followed by an 8-4 triumph at No. 3 doubles by junior Nick Ersoy (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and first-year Kyle Van Winter (Scaggsville, Md./Good Counsel).
Junior Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and first-year Connor McKissick (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) then outlasted juniors Arun Pant (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) and Teron Tyre (Showell, Md./Stephen Decatur) for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles to send St. Mary's into singles action with a 3-0 advantage.
Hardesty began singles play with a straight-set win at No. 1 while Ersoy rallied to hand junior Joe Guididas (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) a 2-6, 6-0, 10-7 setback at No. 5 singles. Bishop, Paulishak, and Van Winter earned straight-set victories to stretch the Seahawks' lead to 8-0.
McKissick then battled Pant in the final match of the day, posting a three-set (6-2, 3-6, 10-8) triumph at No. 4 singles.
The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday, March 17th as St. Mary's takes on Albright College for its final match at the PTR Spring TennisFest. The match is scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
