Poffenberger Nets Milestone as St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Returns to Win Column

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) notched a single-game third-best 10 points en route to her 100th career point as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team bounced back with an 18-14 victory over Christopher Newport University to open up Capital Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.

Poffenberger finished the day with game-bests of five goals and five assists (career-high as well) for a career-best 10 points. She tallied her 100th career point as she assisted on sophomore attacker Abbey Harrison's (Easton, Md./Easton) behind-the-back goal with 4:04 left in the game.

St. Mary's (6-1, 1-0 CAC) next top scorer was junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) with season-best four goals and an assist. Harrison and sophomore attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) each contributed a hat trick in the win. It was the first career three-goal performance for Harrison and second for Gesner.

Christopher Newport (4-5, 1-1 CAC) owned a 2-1 lead at 24:58 before the Seahawks went on a 5-0 run to stake a 6-2 advantage at 17:24. The Captains answered with back-to-back goals to close within two at 13:53. The two sides then alternated goals with St. Mary's outscoring CNU, 4-3, for a 10-7 Seahawk halftime lead.

Newman posted all her four goals in the first half to lead all scorers while Poffenberger also had four first-half points on two goals and two assists. Junior Kylie Chaplin (Oak Hill, Va./Chantilly) picked up three goals to lead CNU before missing the second half with two yellow cards.

The Captains cut the gap to three once again in the first minute of the second stanza on sophomore attacker Meaghan Galvin's (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) unassisted goal at 29:06 but would get no closer. St. Mary's used a 4-0 run to establish its biggest lead of the game – a seven-goal advantage at 21:07. The Seahawks then held a 17-10 lead at 12:43 before CNU closed out the game on a 4-1 run.

Galvin finished the day with three goals and an assist to lead the Captains while Chaplin and first-year Catie Chess (Fairfax, Va./Flint Hill) each chipped in a hat trick.

Shots were even at 27 apiece while St. Mary's recorded a 10-7 margin in ground balls as three Seahawks each scooped up two loose balls. CNU edged the Seahawks, 17-16, in draw controls as Galvin and sophomore Lindsay Weaver (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) each grabbed four draws.

Goalkeepers Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Lexi Thorne (Riva, Md./Pallotti) combined for nine saves for the Seahawks as Dunn recorded four in 32:29 and Thorne turned away five in 27:31. Junior Hanna Slough (Henrico, Va./Godwin) picked up three first-half saves in CNU's second loss in a row.

The Seahawks will jump out of conference play on Tuesday, March 24th when St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to face No. 12 The Catholic University of America at 6:00 p.m.
