Box Score Washington, D.C. – Junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) collected her 150th career point as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team picked up just their second loss of the season Tuesday evening, falling 15-6 to No. 13 The Catholic University of America in non-conference action.
Senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) and junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) paced the Seahawks with two goals each.
St. Mary's (6-2) struck first 58 seconds in as Bishop finished off a feed from junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro). Catholic then rattled off eight straight to head into halftime with a seven-goal cushion.
Sophomore midfielder Anna Stumme (Millersville, Md./Seton Keough) led Catholic with three goals at intermission.
Newman converted a free position shot to start the second half before the Cardinals scored three unanswered goals to stretch their lead to 11-2 at 20:30. Back-to-back goals by sophomore midfielder Erika Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Newman cut the deficit to 10-4 at 13:35. Newman's second goal of the evening gave the three-year starter her 150th career point (93 G, 57 A).
Catholic closed out the game on a 4-2 run for its third consecutive win. The Cardinals outshot St. Mary's, 41-16, and controlled the ground ball battle, 33-17. CUA also grabbed 13 of 23 draw controls.
Junior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) finished the game with 12 stops, including 10 in the second half. Senior Tricia Pehnke (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) turned away eight Seahawk shots for her sixth win.
St. Mary's will return to Capital Athletic Conference play for its next game as the Seahawks travel to Buena Vista, Virginia to face Southern Virginia University this Friday, March 27th at 5:00 p.m.
