Buena Vista, Va. – Seventeen Seahawks scored as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team returned to the win column with an 18-2 Capital Athletic Conference road victory over Southern Virginia University Friday night.

Senior captain Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) was the only player with multiple goals as Bishop found the back of the net twice while junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and sophomore attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) each tallied three points on a goal and two assists.

The Seahawks (7-2, 2-0 CAC) remain undefeated in conference play as St. Mary's rattled off 11 unanswered goals for an 11-0 lead at 8:04, scoring seven in less than five minutes. Junior midfielder Zoe Bradshaw (Stevensville, Mont./Mt. Ararat) finally put Southern Virginia (0-10, 0-3 CAC) on the board with an unassisted goal at 5:30. SMCM scored two more to head into halftime with a 13-1 advantage.

Bishop led all scorers in the first half with her two goals while Gesner chipped in all three of her points.

St. Mary's stretched its scoring run to seven straight before sophomore attacker Claire Houghtaling (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill) picked up the game's final goal in the last second of the contest.

The Seahawks outshot Southern Virginia, 27-6 and staked a 10-4 margin in ground balls as junior goalkeeper Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) scooped up two. St. Mary's dominated draw controls, 16-5, as first-year midfielder Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) grabbed five.

Dunn made two first-half stops in 18:30 while first-year Lexi Thorne (Riva, Md./Pallotti) came up with one save in 41:30. First-year Cammi Miller (Herriman, Utah/Herriman) grabbed seven stops as the Knights are still searching for their first win of the season.

St. Mary's will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon as the Seahawks remain in southern Virginia for a non-conference matchup at Roanoke College in Salem at 2:00 p.m.
