Box Score Westminster, Md. – Junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) put in a career performance Wednesday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team picked up a 16-14 non-conference road win over McDaniel College.
Poffenberger matched her career-best with seven goals while adding an assist to finish with a career-high eight points. Today's victory marks St. Mary's (3-0) first undefeated start to season since the 2006 campaign when the Seahawks opened up with a 7-0 record.
Sophomore attacker Abbey Harrison (Easton, Md./Easton) contributed a hat trick and one helper while midfielders Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and Erika Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) each tallied four points on two goals and two assists.
The Seahawks found themselves down 12-11 at 13:06 after senior attacker Mallory Michel (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) capped off a 3-0 run to return the lead to McDaniel for the first time since 29 seconds remained in the first half.
Poffenberger then had three goals and an assist in St. Mary's 5-0 run to reclaim the lead and own a four-goal advantage with 2:04 remaining in the game. Senior attacker Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and junior midfielder Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md./Spalding) each found the back of the net in the final 1:09 of the contest to close the gap to two before time expired.
McDaniel (2-1) scored its final goal with 17 ticks on the clock and then won the ensuing draw control, firing off a shot as time expired which junior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) turned away.
The Green Terror outshot St. Mary's, 35-24, while posting a 14-12 margin in ground balls. The Seahawks edged the hosts, 16-15, in draw controls as Kopf picked up four while Newman and junior midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana) each had three.
Dunn finished with 12 saves, including eight in the first half, for the second straight game while adding three ground balls. Senior Lily Galzerano (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) recorded three stops in McDaniel's first loss of the season.
The game was tied 7-7 at halftime as Poffenberger and senior attacker Julia Jacobs (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) each had four goals to lead their respective teams. Jacobs finished the game as the Green Terror's leading scorer with five goals and an assist.
St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday, March 7th as the Seahawks host Randolph-Macon College at Seahawk Stadium in a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m.
