Newman Carries Seahawk Women's Lacrosse to Regular-Season Finale Win

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) matched her career-high Saturday afternoon in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 17-10 Capital Athletic Conference win over Frostburg State University in the regular-season finale.

The win locked up the No. 3 seed for St. Mary's (12-4, 6-2 CAC) while Frostburg State (9-7, 3-5 CAC) finished as the sixth seed in the 2015 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament which begins Tuesday, April 21st with first-round action. The Seahawks will host Frostburg in a first-round matchup at 4:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the semifinals at No. 2 seed York College of Pennsylvania.

Newman finished with a career- and game-high seven goals to lead all scorers in the game while sophomore midfielder Erika Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) collected her second hat trick of the season. Junior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) also tallied three points on two goals and an assist.

St. Mary's found themselves down 5-1 at 12:36 as five different Bobcats got past the Seahawk defense. The Seahawks regrouped and responded with five unanswered goals, including two in a 39-second span, to head into halftime with a 6-5 lead. Poffenberger paced all scorers with her three points while Newman had two in the first half.

Frostburg tied the game at 8-8 within the first 10 minutes of the second half as senior midfielder Malory Brunett (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scored twice in the Bobcats' 3-2 run. Newman notched two in a 3-0 Seahawk run for an 11-8 lead at 17:07. Brunett struck again at 14:42 to trim the lead to two before St. Mary's used a 4-0 run to post a six-goal lead at 7:19. Newman capped the run with two in 35 seconds.

Sophomore attacker Megan Hart (Hanover, Md./Howard) tallied the final goal for Frostburg State at 6:55 before first-year attacker Lacey Brown (Monkton, Md./Hereford) and Newman rounded out the scoring for the game.

Brunett finished the game with four goals, eight draw controls, and six caused turnovers to pace Frostburg State.

St. Mary's outshot the Bobcats, 26-16, and recorded a 27-21 margin in ground balls as four Seahawks each scooped up three loose balls. The Seahawks edged Frostburg, 16-12, in draw controls as Newman grabbed five draws.

First-year Lexi Thorne (Riva, Md./Pallotti) registered five saves in 53:05 minutes for the Seahawks while sophomore Dylan Teitelbaum (Bright Waters, N.Y./Bayshore) came up with five stops as well for FSU.
