Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Wednesday night's Capital Athletic Conference women's basketball matchup between St. Mary's College of Maryland and York College of Pennsylvania was a game of runs. York, however, posted the last run to return to the win column with a 67-57 over the Seahawks.
Following three quarters of play, St. Mary's (4-10, 2-5 CAC) rode a 48-45 advantage into the fourth period as sophomore guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) hit a jumper with 16 seconds left in the third stanza.
Senior guard Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) knocked down a shot at 6:50 of the fourth to maintain the Seahawks' three-point lead but their 52-49 advantage would be the last as York, who received votes in this week's WBCA coaches poll, took over. The Spartans (12-2, 6-1 CAC) turned around the three-point deficit into a 10-point victory with their last run of the game, outscoring St. Mary's 18-5.
Kline finished with her 12th double-digit scoring performance of the season as she tallied a game-best 17 points, connecting on three triples. Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds while McClain paced the Seahawks with nine boards, four blocks, and three steals and chipped in nine points as well.
York scored the game's first basket but it was the Seahawks leading 12-9 at the end of one. The biggest lead of the quarter for St. Mary's was 12-6 at 1:40 when sophomore guard Christine Morin (Kensington, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) fired up a three-pointer.
The Seahawks stretched their lead to five on a Kline jumper at 7:33 before junior Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) sparked York to a 19-7 run with four points, three blocks, and two steals. The Spartans, who shot 69.2-percent from the field in the second quarter, headed into the locker room at halftime with a 30-23 advantage.
Sophomore Beth Wiseley (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including one triple, while Kline paced the hosts with nine.
St. Mary's shot 55.0-percent from the floor and forced five turnovers as the Seahawks outscored York, 25-15, in the third period. York held a 39-32 lead at 5:53 after Hruz connected on a three-pointer before the hosts put together a 16-6 run to regain the momentum and lead once more.
Junior Morgan Golec (Abington, Md./Patterson Mill) was the highest scorer for York with 13 off the bench while Wiseley finished with her 12 first-half points. Hruz also notched a dozen points for the Spartans.
St. Mary's will look to rebound this Saturday, January 16th when the Seahawks travel to Middletown, Pennsylvania to take on Penn State Harrisburg (6-8, 2-5 CAC) in another CAC tilt at 1:00 p.m.
