Box Score Westminster, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team finally found their offensive rhythm Monday night but faltered seven points shy of their fourth win of the season. McDaniel College (8-2) pulled out the 64-57 non-conference win over the Seahawks (3-8) last night.
St. Mary's owned a 53-51 lead with nine minutes left in the game before senior guard Lindsay Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) cut the deficit in half at 8:05. From there, McDaniel went on to close out the game on a 12-4 run as five Seahawk miscues in the quarter led to six points for the Green Terror.
First-year forward Kobe Chaney (Annapolis, Md./South River) posted a double-digit scoring effort for the fifth time this season with a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds plus season-best four assists. Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed 11 points and game-high nine boards while sophomore guard Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) chipped in 10.
The Seahawks controlled the glass for the game by a 37-32 margin as the starters combined for 26 caroms, led by Haller's nine and Chaney's seven followed by six from senior guard Anna McClain (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends).
St. Mary's came out firing in the first quarter, staking a 23-16 advantage behind 61.1% shooting from the field. The Seahawk defense held strong and kept McDaniel to 28.6% from the floor. Chaney tallied eight points in the period while McClain grabbed four defensive rebounds to aid the cause.
The second quarter belonged to the Green Terror as they outscored St. Mary's, 20-14, behind six points each from guards Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Amanda Wood (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy).
McDaniel finished with a 47.4-field goal percentage in the second, scoring 12 in the paint and six from downtown, but the Seahawks held on for a 37-36 halftime lead despite giving up 14 points on seven turnovers. Chaney had a dozen at intermission on 6-of-8 shooting plus five rebounds while Davis paced the Green Terror with 10 points.
Six lead changes took place in the third quarter but St. Mary's managed to stay ahead, 50-49, at the end of three as both sides tallied 13 points.
Nichols finished with 17 and eight rebounds to lead McDaniel while Davis came in with 14 points and six assists. Junior forward Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) added 12 points and seven caroms.
St. Mary's will return to Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, January 6th as the team travels to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on Southern Virginia University (1-9, 0-4 CAC) at 5:30 p.m.
