St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Knocks off No. 16 Washington and Lee

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Juniors Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) and Mackenzie Rayburn (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to an 8-7 defeat of No. 16 Washington and Lee University on a cold, rainy, and windy Wednesday afternoon.

Gesner converted a free position shot for her second goal of the season with 1:13 left in the game. Washington and Lee won the ensuing draw and junior attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) fired off a shot with 42 ticks on the clock which went off the post and the loose ball was picked up by senior captain Kate Somerville (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), who ran the ball down into the Seahawk offensive end.

St. Mary's (2-0) then turned the ball over near the restraining line with 11 seconds to go. W&L was able to launch a long pass to Procaccino, who caught and turn in the middle of the eight-meter arc but Rayburn was there to check her stick and pick up the ground ball as time expired.

Senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) paced the Seahawk offense with her second straight hat trick plus two assists while Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) added two scores.

The Seahawks broke a 2-2 draw with a 4-0 run in the final 15 minutes of the first half for a 6-2 halftime advantage. Newman led all scorers at intermission with three goals and an assist while senior attacker Ashley Lawrence (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) chipped in a goal and an assist.

Procaccino was the Generals' leading scorer with two goals and an assist while attackers Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) and Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J./Lawrenceville) tallied two goals apiece.

The second half went to Washington and Lee (0-2) as the Generals opened up the half with four straight, including a pair from Procaccino. Poffenberger stopped the bleeding with her second of the day at 5:11 off an assist from Newman. Procaccino then fed Castelo for the game-tying goal at 3:33.

St. Mary's edged the Generals, 14-13, in shots as well as 15-14 in ground balls with Somerville and seniors Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana) each picking up three loose balls.

W&L dominated the draw controls by a 12-4 margin as first-year midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the way with three.

The Seahawks forced 19 turnovers and D'Agostaro, Miller, and sophomore midfielder Megan Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each caused two miscues. Senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) picked up one stop in the game. For WLU, sophomore Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) (22 minutes played, 2 saves) and first-year Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) (38 minutes, 2 saves) combined for four saves.

The Seahawks will return to action next Wednesday, March 2 when they travel to Westminster, Maryland to take on McDaniel College in non-conference action at 4:00 p.m.
