Box Score Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team went on a tear in the extra period and secured an 81-66 overtime victory over the host Frostburg State University Bobcats Saturday afternoon. Today's win completes St. Mary's season sweep of Frostburg.
FSU (3-18, 0-14 CAC) forced an additional quarter of play in the final minute of regulation when senior forward Courtney Young (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) connecting on a jump shot off a pass from junior guard Kache Fields (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) to knot the game at 64-64 at 1:01.
Sophomore captain Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) was fouled with four seconds left and had an opportunity to win the game for the Seahawks in regulation but missed both free throws.
It was all St. Mary's (7-14, 5-9 CAC) in overtime as the Seahawks outscored Frostburg State, 17-2, and on the defensive side of the ball, they held the Bobcats scoreless from the floor (0-for-6) and forced six turnovers. Frostburg's lone two points came from Young hitting a pair of free throws at 4:04.
For the second time this season, two Seahawks finished with 20-point performances as St. Mary's tallied a season-high 81 points on a season-best 30 made field goals. SMCM also registered season-highs of 20 assists and 13 steals.
Junior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) poured in a career- and game-best 29 points as she shot 50.0-percent from the field, making a career-high 12 field goals. Haller recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds while matching a season-best with five blocks. Kline finished the afternoon with 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting, including four three-pointers.
Sophomore captain Olivia Nowlin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) also put up double-digit scoring numbers with 11 as Nowlin drained a pair of threes. She also hauled in a career-best seven boards while adding six assists and a game-best six steals.
St. Mary's playoff hopes remain alive with today's victory as the Seahawks are now tied for the sixth spot with Penn State Harrisburg (9-12, 5-9 CAC). SMCM remains on the road for its next game, traveling to York College of Pennsylvania (16-5, 10-4 CAC) on Wednesday, February 10th. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
Frostburg State controlled action in the first quarter as the Bobcats jumped out to a 12-0 lead at 3:02. However, back-to-back three-pointers sparked a 10-0 run by St. Mary's in the final 2:18 of the period. The Seahawks took over the lead at the start of the second behind four points from Haller but FSU managed to reclaim the advantage and hold on for a 31-30 halftime lead.
Young led the Bobcats in the game with a double-double on 20 points and game-best 12 rebounds.
