Box Score Bayamon, P.R. – Junior attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) posted a career day Monday morning in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to their sixth straight victory of the season. St. Mary's (6-0), who received votes in this week's IWLCA Division III Poll, notched a 17-6 victory over Guilford College.
Gesner finished the game with game- and career-bests of three goals, two assists and five points while senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) added two goals and two assists. Attackers Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) and Lacey Brown (Monkton, Md./Hereford) contributed two goals apiece in the Seahawks' 11-point win.
Guilford (2-3) scored first but St. Mary's (6-0) rattled off three straight to stake a 3-1 lead at 16:35 as the Seahawks converted two free position shots. The Quakers responded with back-to-back unassisted goals to even up the score at 2-2 at 12:51. The Seahawks ended the half on a 3-0 run, including Gesner's second of the day with two seconds to go. Following that goal, St. Mary's carried a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Junior midfielder Demming Carlow (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) paced Guilford in its third loss of the season with two goals while sophomore attacker Taylor Campellone (Newtown, Pa./George School) added a goal and an assist.
Campellone closed the gap to two with a free position goal at 27:46 to start the second half. Sixteen seconds later, senior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) sparked a 9-0 run to establish a formidable 15-4 advantage with 10:25 left to play. The Quakers tacked on two more in less than a minute to make it a nine-goal game at 5:25.
Sartor tallied her second of the day at 3:35 while first-year attacker Sydni Thacker (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) picked up her first collegiate goal with 20 seconds left on the clock.
St. Mary's outshot the Quakers, 31-19, and won the ground ball battle, 22-18, behind four loose ball pickups by senior midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana). Turnovers were even at 21 for each side and Miller chipped in two caused turnovers on defense.
The Seahawks also notched a decisive 15-9 advantage in draw controls as sophomore midfielder Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) grabbed a game-best four draws. Five of St. Mary's 17 goals came off of free position shots as the Seahawks went 5-of-8 from the 8-meter arc.
Senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) put up eight saves, including seven stops in the first half, and two ground balls in the win while junior Sammi Milbourn (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) turned away eight shots as well in 54:35.
The Seahawks continue their play in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, March 16 as St. Mary's takes on Washington College at 10:30 a.m.
