Poffenberger Powers Seahawk Women's Lacrosse to Win over No. 18 Washington College

Bayamon, P.R. – Senior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) tallied season-highs of five goals, four assists, and nine points in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to their second win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. The Seahawks closed out the game on a 5-0 run to pick up a 14-8 victory over No. 18 Washington College.

Joining Poffenberger with multiple goals on the day were junior attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) and senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley). Gesner collected her third straight hat trick and finished the day by matching her career-highs of three goals, two assists, and five points while Newman contributed two goals.

Senior attacker Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) finished off a pass from junior attacker Alli Dudley (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) to pull Washington College (3-2) within one at 15:41 of the second half. From there, Poffenberger took over as she scored three, including two to spark the Seahawks' 5-0 run, as the team clinched their seventh straight win to remain undefeated on the season.

St. Mary's (7-0), who received votes in this week's IWLCA Division III Poll, edged the Shorewomen, 28-24, in shots while the Seahawks earned the advantage in ground balls, 28-22, as Newman and senior defender Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each picked up four loose balls.

D'Agostaro and senior captain Kate Somerville (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each registered three caused turnovers in forcing the Shorewomen into 25 miscues for the game. However, Washington College posted a 14-9 margin in draw controls behind a game-best five won draws by sophomore Autumn Spence (Springfield, Pa./Springfield).

Senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) turned away 10 shots, including six in the first half, and grabbed three ground balls in the win while junior Maddie Mullen (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) made eight saves, including six in the first 30 minutes, before being subbed out in the 50th minute.

The Seahawks had a strong start to the game as well as St. Mary's jumped out to a 4-0 lead at 23:48 with Poffenberger scoring twice in the run. Junior attacker Katherine Vincent (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) put Washington College on the scoreboard with back-to-back goals in a 30-second span and initiated a 4-0 for WC, knotting the score at 4-4 at 9:59. Newman gave the Seahawks a one-goal advantage at halftime off a Gesner feed.

Vincent finished the day with three points (1g, 2a) to lead the Shorewomen while Kendall and attackers Morgen Moran (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) and Virginia Parker (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) each notched two goals in Washington College's second straight loss.

The Seahawks return to the mainland to open up Capital Athletic Conference action this Saturday, March 19 in Newport News, Virginia, taking on Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
