Seahawk Women's Lacrosse Dominant in Road Win over McDaniel

Box Score

Westminster, Md. – Senior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) and junior attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) combined for 12 points in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a convincing 18-8 non-conference win at McDaniel College Wednesday afternoon.

Poffenberger finished with season-bests of four assists and seven points while Gesner tallied career-bests of three goals, two assists, and five points. Senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) contributed four goals while junior attacker Abbey Harrison (Easton, Md./Easton) chipped in a career-best three scores.

McDaniel (1-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead at 25:49 as the Green Terror capitalized on St. Mary's slow start. For almost 14 minutes, neither side was able to find the back of the net. Harrison finally broke through for the Seahawks at the 12-minute mark and floodgates opened as St. Mary's would end up outscoring the hosts, 8-1, in the final 12 minutes for an 8-4 advantage at halftime.

Senior midfielder Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md./Spalding) and sophomore attacker Emily Brownawell (Sparks, Md./Oldfields) paced McDaniel with two goals and an assist apiece while sophomore midfielder Olivia Geiger (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) notched a pair.

The Seahawks (3-0), who finished the first half on a 4-0 run, continued their momentum in the second stanza with five more unanswered goals to stake at 13-4 advantage at 18:14. Geiger and Quinn slowed down the onslaught with back-to-back goals in less than three minutes. St. Mary's posted a 4-1 run in a six-minute span to establish a 10-goal lead with 4:50 left in the game.

St. Mary's notched a 32-26 margin in shots and edged the Green Terror, 21-20, in ground balls as Poffenberger and senior defender Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each scooped up four loose balls to pace the Seahawks.

The Seahawks won their first draw control battle of the season by a 16-10 margin as Newman gathered up four draws. Poffenberger and senior attacker Ashley Lawrence (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) aided the defensive effort with two caused turnovers each.

Senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) matched her career-best with 13 saves and one ground ball as St. Mary's, who received votes in this week's IWLCA Division III Poll, remain undefeated. First-year Katelin Johnson (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) had nine saves in McDaniel's second straight loss.

The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, March 5 when they welcome Randolph-Macon College to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m.
