Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Eleven different Seahawks found the back of the net as the No. 20 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team posted a 15-2 victory over Southern Virginia University for their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season Friday afternoon.
First-year attacker Caitlin Katchmar (Hereford, Md./Hereford) led the Seahawks' scoring barrage with her first career hat trick while senior attacker Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) also picked up three points on two goals and an assist. First-year midfielder Ali Collie (Glen Arm, Md./Dulaney) added a season-best four assists.
The Seahawks (9-1, 1-1 CAC) tallied a 4-0 lead at 25:34 as junior attacker Erika Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) chipped in a goal and an assist in the run. Senior midfielder Rainey Whitworth (Savannah, Ga./SCAD) finally put Southern Virginia on the scoreboard with a free position goal at 24:50. St. Mary's then closed out the half on a 5-0 run for a 9-1 halftime lead. Katchmar and sophomore midfielder Megan Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each scored twice while Collie had a hand in three scores.
St. Mary's stretched its run into an 8-0 rout with the first three goals of the second half for a 12-1 lead at 22:57. Senior midfielder Zoe Bradshaw (Stevensville, Mont./Mt. Ararat) notched the Knights' second and final goal of the day with an unassisted tally at 19:09. Sartor and defenders Mackenzie Rayburn (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and Kate Somerville (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) closed out the scoring for the Seahawks with sophomore midfielder Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) assisting on two.
St. Mary's dominated in all statistical categories, outshooting the Knights, 35-8, outhustling the visitors, 23-8 in ground balls, and winning 14 of 19 draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Maribeth Anderson (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) scooped up a career- and game-high eight ground balls as well as caused a career- and game-best three turnovers while Cannon came up with a career-and game-high five draws.
Senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) made four saves with one ground ball in the Seahawks' second straight win while first-year Rachel Miller (Orem, Utah/Orem) finished with nine stops.
The Seahawks will play their third game in five days tomorrow afternoon, hosting Roanoke College at Seahawk Stadium in non-conference action at 1:00 p.m.
