Box Score Ashland, Va. – The undefeated record of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team remained intact Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's (4-0) stymied a late comeback by the host Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets (0-1) and held on for a 12-10 non-conference win at Day Field.
Senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) led the way for the Seahawks with four goals while fellow captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) added three goals and an assists. Sophomore attacker Lacey Brown (Monkton, Md./Hereford) came off the bench to contribute a career-best three goals.
The Seahawks, who received votes in this week's IWLCA Division III Poll, looked to have the game in the bag with 19:15 remaining as Brown's third of the day off an assist from sophomore attacker Gabby Beese (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) gave St. Mary's an 11-4 lead – its biggest of the game.
However, Randolph-Macon went on to rattle off five unanswered goals in a six-minute span to pull within two with 12:16 left. Senior attacker Shannon Jamieson (Cypress, Texas/Cypress-Woods) initiated and capped the 5-0 run and chipped in an assist while sophomore attacker Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) had a hand in two goals in the run with a pair of helpers.
Newman picked up her fourth at 5:06 to extend the Seahawk lead to three before Lightfoot notched her first score of the game just 10 seconds later to keep her team within two. St. Mary's defensive play really stepped up in holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the final minutes of the game.
Jamieson finished the day with four goals and an assist while Lightfoot flipped the script with a goal and four helpers.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead at 18:02 to start the game behind two goals apiece from Newman and Poffenberger. Jamieson halted St. Mary's momentum with an unassisted goal at 17:38. Juniors Erika Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Abbey Harrison (Easton, Md./Easton) each found the back of the net to stretch the lead to 6-1 at 4:44. Senior attacker Alyssa Chavez (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) tacked on her first at 2:50 to send the Seahawks into halftime with a 6-2 advantage.
St. Mary's outshot the Yellow Jackets, 33-27, while winning the ground ball battle, 19-12, behind four loose ball pickups by senior midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana). Miller also added two caused turnovers in the win. However, Randolph-Macon dominated the draw controls, 18-5, as midfielders Susie Snee (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) each gained six draws.
Senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) registered 10 saves and two ground balls while junior Allie Walker (Towson, Md./Mercy) had 10 stops, with nine coming in the first half, Randolph-Macon's season-opening loss.
The Seahawks will return to action on Friday, March 11 when they travel to Collegeville, Pennsylvania to take on Ursinus College in non-conference action at 4:00 p.m.
