No. 13 St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Flies Past Marymount (Va.)

Arlington, Va. – Nine different scorers found the back of the net for the No. 13 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon, leading the Seahawks to a 16-9 Capital Athletic Conference win over the Marymount (Va.) University Saints.

Senior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) paced St. Mary's in the win with four goals while sophomore midfielder Megan Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) contributed her second hat trick of the season. Three other Seahawks finished with three points each in addition to Cannon's three-point performance.

St. Mary's (14-2, 5-2 CAC) opened up the game on a 4-1 run behind two goals and an assist from senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley). Back-to-back scores pulled Marymount (9-6, 3-4 CAC) within 4-3 at 10:43. The Seahawks took over and rattled off four unanswered goals with a pair from Cannon for an 8-3 halftime advantage.

Sophomore attacker Abby Wescott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) led the Saints in their second straight loss with a goal and three assists while first-year midfielder Bridget Odom (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) chipped in two goals and an assist.

The Seahawks carried their momentum from the end of the first half into the second stanza, tacking on two more goals to stretch their run to 6-0 and posting an 10-3 lead at 25:49. Two goals from Odom and two from first-year attacker Jessica Crew (Leesburg, Va./Highland School) helped MU close the gap to 10-7 at 16:27.

Two consecutive goals from Poffenberger sparked a 6-2 Seahawk run to end the game. Poffenberger finished the run with three tallies while sophomore attacker Lacey Brown (Monkton, Md./Hereford) added a goal and an assist.

Marymount outshot the Seahawks, 30-25 while St. Mary's gained a 14-13 edge in draw controls behind five from junior defender Mackenzie Rayburn (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll). SMCM also posted an 18-14 advantage in ground balls as Poffenberger picked up five.

On defense, Newman, Rayburn, and Poffenberger each collected three caused turnovers. In goal, senior Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) came up with nine stops in 44 minutes while first-year Holly Reik (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) made six saves for Marymount.

The Seahawks will play their regular-season finale this Saturday, April 16 when St. Mary's travels to Western Maryland to face Frostburg State University in a conference matchup at 3:00 p.m.
