No. 13 Seahawk Women's Lacrosse Cruises to Win and Secures No. 2 Seed

Frostburg, Md. – The No. 13 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team rolled to a 19-9 Capital Athletic Conference win over the host Frostburg State University Bobcats Saturday afternoon behind 10 different scorers.

In the process, St. Mary's (15-2, 6-2 CAC) locked up the second seed in the 2016 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament with today's win and No. 16 York College of Pennsylvania's 10-5 victory over No. 15 Christopher Newport University.

The Seahawks receive a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed and will host a semifinal match on Saturday, March 23. Game time will be determined at a later date. St. Mary's will get Wednesday's first-round winner between No. 3 seed University of Mary Washington and No. 6 seed Marymount (Va.) University.

Junior attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) paced St. Mary's in the win with four points on three goals and an assist while midfielders Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and Megan Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and first-year attacker Sydni Thacker (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) each collected a hat trick.

St. Mary's jumped out a 3-0 lead at 18:17 as senior attacker Ashley Lawrence (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) had a hand in two goals. Frostburg made it a one-goal game at 10:36 behind a goal and an assist from junior attacker Megan Hart (Hanover, Md./Howard). The Seahawks closed out the half on a 6-0 run in the final 7:13 of the half for a 9-2 halftime advantage.

Hart and sophomore midfielder Courtney Ridenour (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) each tallied three points to lead the Bobcats while junior midfielders Molly Hart (Hanover, Md./Howard) and Emani Byrd (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) finished with two goals apiece.

The Bobcats (6-8, 2-6 CAC) opened up the second half with two goals in a row to pull within five at 23:00 as FSU would get no closer. However, St. Mary's reeled off five straight to pull away from Frostburg with a 14-4 lead at 16:34. Each side scored five to finish out the game.

St. Mary's registered a 38-23 advantage in shots as well as an 18-12 margin in draw controls behind five draw controls from sophomore midfielder Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James). Frostburg edged the Seahawks, 18-15, in ground balls at three Bobcats each picked up three loose balls.

On defense, senior midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana) finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while senior Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) came up with three stops in the first 30 minutes and first-year Emma Brown (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) posted a season-best five saves in the second half. Junior Dylan Teitelbaum (Bright Waters, N.Y./Bayshore) picked up nine saves in 49 minutes for FSU.
