Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The No. 14 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team fought hard Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks took on 13-time defending Capital Athletic Conference champion, No. 4 Salisbury University on Senior Day. St. Mary's gave the Sea Gulls a run for their money but succumbed to a 10-3 decision.
Before the game got underway, the Seahawks recognized their 10 seniors: Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley), Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Kate Somerville (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro), Maggie Wagner (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven), Claire McGagh (Baltimore, Md./Friends School), Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), and Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel).
Three different players found the back of the net for St. Mary's while Newman added an assist.
Salisbury (13-1, 7-0 CAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at 24:27 as senior attacker Megan Wallenhorst (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied a goal and an assist in the opening run. Junior attacker Meg Gesner (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard off a Newman feed at 17:31 for her 24th goal of the season.
The Seahawk defense flustered Salisbury's offense, holding the Sea Gulls scoreless for long stretches at a time during the entire game. SU's final two goals of the first half resulted from free position shots as Salisbury was unable to execute its offensive plays. The Sea Gulls carried a 5-1 advantage into halftime.
Sophomore attacker Kristen Murphy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) paced SU in its ninth consecutive win with four points on three goals and an assist while junior midfielder Gabbi Nieves (Centreville, Va./Paul VI) added a goal and two helpers.
St. Mary's strong defensive presence continued in the second half as the Sea Gulls scoreless streak stretched over 22 minutes in length from the end of the first stanza. The Seahawks pulled within 5-2 at 19:17 as junior attacker Abbey Harrison (Easton, Md./Easton) converted a free position shot.
Murphy came alive for Salisbury, helping to spark a 5-0 run in a 10-minute span, as she tallied two goals and an assist in the run. First-year attacker Gabrielle Mongno (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) capped off the run with an unassisted tally at 2:28. Poffenberger scored a free position goal with under a minute remaining for St. Mary's final score of the day.
Salisbury outshot the hosts, 25-17, and gained a 17-14 edge in ground balls as junior defender Kayla Miller (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scooped up a game-high five. The Sea Gulls also controlled the middle of the field with a 10-4 margin in draw controls as Murphy grabbed game-high three.
In goal, Dunn came up with 11 stops and two ground balls as St. Mary's (13-2, 4-2 CAC) saw its six-game win streak halted. Sophomore Gianna Falcone (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Elizabeth) picked up nine saves in the win.
The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday, April 13 when St. Mary's travels to Arlington, Virginia to take on Marymount (Va.) University in a conference matchup at 4:00 p.m.
