Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – It was a tough day offensively for the No. 10 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team as the Seahawks (16-4) exited the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship following a 10-1 loss to No. 13 The College at Brockport (15-3) in second round action Sunday afternoon.
St. Mary's finishes the 2016 campaign, and the first season under the guidance of head coach Erin McDonnell, with a 16-4 overall record. The Seahawks were making their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance, and first since 2008, and fall to 3-8 in NCAA championship action.
In its third NCAA Tournament appearance, Brockport picked up the program's second NCAA championship win and now own a 2-2 record. The Golden Eagles will take on No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College in the third round next Saturday, May 21 at a four-team regional hosted by Salisbury University. F&M advanced to the third round following a 14-3 victory over the University of Mount Union.
The Golden Eagles controlled the draws by an 11-2 margin behind the strong play of senior attacker Ciara McKeon (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach), who came up with a game-high five draw controls.
Scoring was low and slow in the first half as both sides put on a stingy defensive front. Brockport broke through first at 28:46 as sophomore attacker Samantha Dooling (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) finished off a feed from sophomore midfielder Andrea Zlinsky (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy). The game's next goal would not come until 8:26 remaining in the first half.
Senior attacker Keeley Rice (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead at 8:26 as Rice came around the crease and shot it past senior captain Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel). Zlinsky added a goal to her stat line as she converted a free-position shot with 3:20 left in the half for a three-goal cushion.
St. Mary's avoided the shutout when senior captain Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) sent in a pass from about 15 yards out to senior captain Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) in the center of the eight-meter arc, who turned and fired into the back of the goal with 46 ticks on the clock.
Brockport carried a 3-1 advantage into halftime behind three different scorers.
The Golden Eagles racked up seven unanswered goals in the second half as sophomore attacker Jessica Boddery (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) found the back of the net three times and junior attacker Kelly Wall (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) chipped in two goals and an assist in the 7-0 run.
Boddery (3 goals), Wall (2 goals, 1 assist), and Zlinsky (1 goal, 2 assists) all finished with three points to pace Brockport in the win. Dooling contributed two goals while senior midfielder Makensie Schuber (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) helped out with two assists.
Brockport finished the game outshooting the Seahawks, 25-16, while St. Mary's gained the edge in ground balls, 24-20, as senior defender Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) shared game honors with four loose ball pickups.
