- The Short Story: Junior captain Kerri Kline (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) and senior center Nina Haller (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) joined forces for 45 points Wednesday night in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to an exciting 72-64 overtime victory over Wesley College.
What It Means
- With tonight's win, the Seahawks take the Capital Athletic Conference season series from Wesley and move into seventh place in the conference standings. St. Mary's is currently a game out of grabbing one of the six playoff spots with seven contests left in the regular season.
- Tonight's victory also halted a two-game skid for the Seahawks.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks stretched their lead to nine at the start of the fourth period but Wesley worked the deficit down to one over a six-minute span as sophomore guard Monshea Newsome-Murray (Seaford, Del./Seaford) capped the 12-4 run with a layup at 3:23. Newsome-Murray kept the run alive with five points while St. Mary's didn't score in over four minutes.
- Kline made the second free throw to give the Seahawks a 58-56 lead at 2:28 before both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes until senior Brionna Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) snapped the drought with 29 seconds on the clock to tie it up at 58-all.
- Four seconds later, Newsome-Murray handed the Wolverines their first lead since the 4:55-minute mark of the third quarter with a steal and fast-break layup.
- Kline knocked down a pair of three throws with two ticks on the clock while first-year guard Paige Hailstock's (Rockville, Md./Rockville) three-point attempt was off the mark as time expired to send the game into overtime.
- Wesley claimed its final lead of the contest 36 seconds into overtime on a basket by senior guard Brittany Kerns (Bear, Del./William Penn) and after that, it was all St. Mary's.
- The Seahawks closed out the game strong on a 12-2 run for the key conference win as Haller notched five points and two blocks in the run.
