Virginia – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team (3-2, 0-1 CAC) opened up the spring portion of their 2016-17 schedule Sunday with matches at Randolph-Macon College (1-0) and at No. 27 University of Mary Washington (4-2, 1-0 CAC).
St. Mary's 3, Randolph-Macon 6
Doubles
- Junior captain Connor McKissick (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year Jonathan Gorel (Jessup, Md./Hammond) dropped the first doubles match of the day with a score of 8-4.
- The Seahawks would bounce back at No. 2 doubles when junior captain James Loftis (Annapolis, Md./Saint Andrews [Del.]) and first-year Ethan Garren (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) defeated the Yellow Jackets' Stuart McCroskey and Alex Curnow with a score of 9-7.
- First-years Ron Stith (Cheltenham, Md./ Lackey) and Zach Talamonti (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) ended doubles play with an 8-3 loss.
Singles
- Gorel started singles play with a big win over Randolph-Macon's Jacob Haines as he came up with the 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.
- Garren would continue the hot singles start for the Seahawks as he took down his opponent in straight sets at No. 2 singles.
- The Seahawks would unfortunately drop their next four matches to ultimately fall to Randolph-Macon, 6-3.

Doubles
- Loftis and Garren started off doubles play for the Seahawks with an 8-1 loss at No. 2 doubles.
- McKissick and Gorel as well as Stith and Talamonti would all fall in their doubles matchups by 8-2 margins.
Singles
- The highlight of the matchup came when Gorel took down the Eagles' Eric Hurwitz, a two-time First Team All-CAC selection, at No. 1 singles. Gorel would drop the first set, 6-2, but would come storming back to win the second, 7-5, and then take the third-set tiebreaker, 10-7.
- Gorel's victory ended a long day in Virginia for the Seahawks.
