Seahawk Men's Tennis Falls to Salisbury, Takes Down Frostburg State

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team (7-7, 1-3 CAC) dropped a 9-0 decision to regionally-ranked Salisbury University (11-4, 1-1 CAC) before rebounding with a 9-0 victory over Frostburg State University (3-6, 0-1 CAC) for their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season.

Doubles

  • Junior captain James Loftis (Annapolis, Md./Saint Andrews [Del.]) and first-year Ethan Garren (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had a tough match against Salisbury's Garrett Malave and Colt Williamson, falling 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Singles

  • Loftis posted the best singles outing for the Seahawks as he claimed five games in a 1-6, 4-6 loss to Malave at No. 5 singles.
  • Garren and first-year Ron Stith (Cheltenham, Md./Lackey) each won three games in their respective matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Doubles

  • St. Mary's would put on a dominating performance, starting with doubles play. Before the match even began, the Seahawks held a 2-0 lead as Frostburg forfeited No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
  • Junior captains Connor McKissick (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and Kyle Van Winter (Scaggsville, Md./Good Counsel) would team up for the first time this season and win their match, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
  • Loftis and Garren would also come out on top in their match with a score of 8-1.

Singles

  • The Seahawks dropped only five games in singles action.
  • First-year Jack Brandenburg (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) put on his best performance of the spring as Brandenburg won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Garren and McKissick would also win their matches with the same score at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
  • First-year Jonathan Gorel (Jessup, Md./Hammond), Stith, and first-year Zach Talamonti (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) all helped in completing the sweep by winning in straight sets as well.
