WASHINGTON, D.C. - St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse (1-1) fell in heartbreaking fashion by a 17-16 final score to No. 14 Catholic University (1-1) on Wednesday (Feb. 27) evening. The Seahawks erased a seven point deficit in the second half to take the lead, but the Cardinals netted three straight goals with short time remaining for the victory.

How It Happened

• The Seahawks struck first in the contest with a goal from Nicole Kuderski at the 28:46 mark of the opening half. Next, the Cardinals went on a six goal run for a five score advantage over the Seahawks with 12:11 remaining in the half. Ali Collie tallied the Seahawks final two goals in the opening stanza and headed into halftime trailing the Cardinals 9-3.

• The second half of action was much different than the first with the Seahawks finding the back of the cage 13 times. Trailing 10-3, St. Mary's College put together a three score burst to cut into the Cardinal lead. Caitlin Katchmar scored twice during the run and Sydni Thacker capped the scoring streak with a goal of her own. Catholic responded with a goal to extend their lead to five, but the Seahawks immediately answered with another three goal run. Lucy Gussio, Katchmar, and Kate Bartholomew beat the Catholic goalkeeper for scores during the scoring burst.

• Catholic scored with 12:57 remaining in regulation and held a slim three goal lead. The Seahawks continued their scoring ways with four-straight goals to retake a 13-12 advantage with 6:25 left in the game. However, the Cardinals answered with back-to-back goals to regain the lead.

• The Seahawks and Cardinals continued to exchange blows in the final five minutes of action. St. Mary's College strung together another three goal run with two goals from Collie and a goal from Jodi Credit. The Seahawks led by two scores with 2:41 remaining in regulation, but it was short lived as the Cardinals tallied the final three goals to escape with the victory.

Inside the Box Score

• Katchmar led the Seahawks with a career best seven points off of five goals and two assists. Collie followed with four goals and Gussio recorded a season-high three goals.

• Alyssa Demski hustled for a team-high five ground balls, while Credit, Thacker, and Jayne Barkman caused one turnover each.

• In goal, Emma Brown collected 16 saves.
