Men’s Lacrosse Downed by No. 10 Lynchburg

Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team (1-1) traveled to Lynchburg University to take on the No. 10 Hornets (4-0) on Sunday (Mar. 7) afternoon in non-conference play. The Seahawks were downed by the Hornets 20-9.

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks fell behind 3-0 at the 9:08 mark of the first quarter of action. St. Mary's College broke their goose egg on the scoreboard with a goal from Jeremiah Clemmer that snuck past the Lynchburg goalkeeper. The Hornets responded with a two-score run to extend their lead to 5-1. St. Mary's College finished the first frame strong with a goal from Abe Hubbard, which was assisted by Domini Venanzi. 
  • Lynchburg opened up the scoring in the second quarter to pull ahead by four goals, but the Seahawks once again answered with a goal from Venanzi. Jude Brown found Venanzi on the crease and the senior midfielder buried his shot in the back of the cage from a tough angle. Later in the second, Brown recorded his first goal of the game to bring the score to 7-4 in favor of Lynchburg. However, the Hornets responded with three-straight goals to jump out to a10-4 advantage. Ben Claffee notched the final score of the half and the Seahawks headed into halftime trailing 10-5. The Seahawks took advantage of their limited offensive opportunities in the first half by scoring five goals off of seven shots. St. Mary's College also managed to stay in the game after only winning one faceoff in the opening half.
  • The third quarter was a challenging frame for the Seahawks as they were outscored 7-1 and fell behind 17-6. Brown tallied his second goal of the game in the third stanza. The Hornets netted the first two goals in the fourth quarter to take a commanding 19-6 lead. St. Mary's College ended the game on a high note as they strung together a 3-1 run. Hubbard, Brown, and Jack Brocato notched scores in the final frame for the Seahawks.
Inside the Box Score
  • Brown led the Seahawks on the offensive end with three goals and one assist. Venanzi followed with one goal and two assists, respectively. On the defensive end, Antonio Mastromanolis, Tommy Rinder, Ethan Little, and Mitch Boudreau caused one turnover each. In addition, Boudreau hustled for a team-high five ground balls. 
  • DJ Walker and Kyrle Preis split time in goal for the Seahawks. Both goalkeepers collected six saves each. 
  • Brett Rogers led the Hornets with three goals and three assists on the afternoon.
