Men’s Tennis Opens Fall Season with a Victory

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team opened up their 2021 fall season with Catholic University this afternoon (Sept 18). The Seahawks beat out the Cardinals with a final score of 7-1. 

St. Mary's College - 7, Catholic University - 2

Doubles
  • The Seahawks swept doubles, beating the Cardinals 3-0. Stephen Alam and Kier Nacua competed in the No. 1 spot and beat the Cardinals 8-3. Sam Sheats and Tyler Vanvalkenburg in the No. 2 spot, edged Catholic, 8-2.
  • Closing out in the No. 3 spot, Keawe Shepherd-Johnson and Liam Pratt, got by Catholic with a score of 8-5.
Singles
  • St. Mary's College topped Catholic in doubles as well, 4-2. Alam competed in the No. 1 spot but fell to Catholic's Juan Gomez, 6-2 and 6-4. Nacua dominated the No. 2 match, over the Cardinals 6-0, 6-2. 
  • Sheats swept Matthew Rudolf at the No. 3 spot with scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Vanvalkenburg fell to Catholic's David Brennan, 2-6, 4-5 (ret) at the No. 4 spot. 
  • The Seahawks closed out the day with two wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Shepherd-Johnson and Pratt triumphed over the Cardinals with scores 6-0, 6-3, and 7-5, 6-4 respectively.
