Seahawks Men’s Cross Country Performs Well at Aubrey Shenk Invitational

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team registered season-best and/or personal-record times by all nine Seahawks competing at the Aubrey Shenk Invitational hosted by Gettysburg College Saturday morning (Oct. 18). St. Mary's College posted a 24th-place finish with 627 points in the 34-team field.
 
Clay Peets of NCAA Division I St. Bonaventure University took home top individual honors as Peets finished the 8K course in 23:56.80 while Lebanon Valley College claimed the team title with 56 points, edging St. Bonaventure by 12 points.
 
How It Happened
  • First-year Brandon Smoot (Hanover, Md./DeMatha) paced SMCM as the first runner to cross the finish line, taking 85th out of 316 runners with a season-best time of 27:11.90.
  • Scoring next for St. Mary's College was sophomore Blake Carberry (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) who tallied a personal record for the second race in a row. Carberry placed 116th in 28:16.50.
  • Junior Noah Fisher (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) was third to finish for the Seahawks, coming in 174th place with a personal-record time of 28:54.70.
  • For the first time this season, sophomore RJ Etzler (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) scored for SMCM as Etzler was the fourth harrier to cross the finish line. He clocked a personal record of 29:34.90 for 200th place.
  • Rounding out the top five scorers was sophomore Owen Swisdak (Sykesville, Md./Century) who contributed points for the first time this season as well. Swisdak crossed the finish line with a personal record of 30:16.20 for 232nd.
  • The other Seahawks notching season bests and/or personal records were sophomore Jack Kuta (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) with 30:57.80, first-year Cooper Breakey (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) with 31:14.40, first-year Austen Specht (Lutherville, Md./Towson) with 35:18.40, and first-year Jax Hansen (Lothian, Md./Southern) with 35:54.40.
